June’s Golden Celebration

June is and always will be the best month of the year. This past June, God allowed me to see another year of life and I happily celebrated turning 50 in grand style as only a diva like me could. While there is longevity in my family, I don’t take a single day of life for granted. I’ve been through a lot and I’ve learned a lot. I don’t take any experience for granted and I have embraced the lessons. I trust God and continue to pray through everything. I am looking forward to all that life and the next 50 years have to offer. Winning a huge lottery would help to fulfill quite a few of those dreams not only for me but my loved ones as well. I digress. 🤷🏽‍♀️. While my actual birthday was pretty low-key in terms of celebration, it was a good day. I always celebrate the entire month and this year was no exception. So I had a vision for my birthday but obviously I was procrastinations a little to much for my BFFs. They took over the planning and put together a wonderful Boozy Birthday Celebration. We kicked off the weekend with drinks, appetizers, and karaoke. On Saturday, We did a sip and paint and culminated with a nice dinner at the Chart house. We managed to sneak in a photo shoot too. A Sunday brunch culminated a wonderful celebration. I am eternally grateful for the women God has placed in my life to be my best friends. They gave me exactly what I wanted and the people who were meant to celebrate with me were present. Father’s Day weekend caused a few folks to miss due to other obligations but that allowed me to keep celebrating for several more weeks into July.

In addition to me celebrating my birthday, I had the pleasure of having one of my dearest friends spend a weekend with me here in VA. We hit up a winery and got to check out the soft opening of the Alamo Draft house. I love the concept of having drinks and a meal served to you while you watch a movie. I also got to see my niece’s efforts a she was in her first dance recital. It was a real cute rendition of Cinderella. The month concluded with a lovely trip to New Orleans to witness the nuptials of my step-son and his beautiful bride. I hung out with my sister in love and once again ate my way through one of my favorite hot places. I wasn’t trying to be too touristy this time, but if you get an opportunity, I would highly encourage you to visit the World War II Museum. It was a very interactive, well planned museum with lots of information and artifacts. The museum is laid out well and flows beautifully. It was a good one on one with my youngest Thorpette. Can’t believe that kid is going to be a high school senior this Fall.

If you took the the time to participate in my birthday bash, I appreciate you. I had a blast. I am always grateful for the love and support of my friends and family. June was better than I expected and more than I could wish for. Reflecting on the month and May too, I know that relationships shouldn’t be taken for granted. Love hard on your family and friends and enjoy the moments you get to make memories. I am no longer #flirtingwtih50, I am 50! Fierce and fabulous! I can see their will be changes ahead. With God, I am here for Every. Single. Bit. Of. It.

Cheers 🥂  to 50 Years!!!

48 is Fabulous

In a few hours, I will be a Fabulous 48 years young. As usual, I've looked back over the past year, and I can't do anything but praise God. I'm so thankful for His Presence in my life. This year had its ups and downs, heartaches, losses, wins, and most important,  lessons with blessings. I haven't always been faithful but God has. I'm grateful for every ache and pain as well as every trial. Those things remind me that I'm here and He still has a destiny for me to fulfill. The year has also reminded me to evaluate my audience. Playtime is over and when you have real life issues, you need real friends-the ones that dig deep, challenge, convict and pray on your behalf.  There were some days, the only place I could turn was to Jesus. Now that is a reality check we all need.

I'm looking ahead to what this year will bring. I'm up for the mountaintop experiences and will pray that I have the fortitude for those that send me into the valley. So many times This year I've asked God why He trusts me with so much but this year, I'm going to leave that question behind and trust the process. Whatever He has for me, is mine. No matter how difficult things seem, I know He's there and He's equipping me for something.

The 40s are liberating in many ways. I love me more than ever-yes, flaws and all. I'm unapologetic about staying true to my values. I'm happy to remind you that I and you are a continuous work in progress. At this point, the opinion of others is pretty much irrelevant. Some friends are closer than family-so no, blood isn't always thicker than water. Some people's seasons simply end. Drama should be saved for anyone but me. I need to see a whole lot of places, so my passport must be renewed. Praying God sends some interesting men my way or opens my mind to dating in this day and age. I am comfortable in my skin...and following God's plan for my life. Embracing the life that I'm living right now even though it may not be the life I imagined. All that being said..in the words of my earthly father, "Life to the fullest, no regrets!" Happy Fabulous 48th Birthday to me!

Nontraditional Traditions

Are you placing more emphasis on your Christmas being Merry or on it being Meaningful? Now that can be a loaded question. No need to take cover, no shots are being fired. One of my devotions placed emphasis on that question and I had already been thinking about this post. I considered it confirmation and so here I am. I love Christmas and I hate stress but somehow the two often get linked. I have to be intentional about why I love Christmas. It's because I love the miracle of the Christ child's birth and all it represents to me as a Christian woman. It is also because I love the music and smells of the season. O Holy Night can bring me to tears, its my favorite Christmas song, I have several renditions on my play list. It's also a chance to really hang out with my children and people I love. Trying to find a few perfect gifts for the ones I love simply makes the time a little sweeter.

What makes the time special are the little things we do. They aren't necessarily unique to us and our home but they are the things that bond us and keep us centered. Those are the family traditions that we have adopted over the years. As the children have gotten older, some things have gone away and been replaced and others remain in place. You can always introduce a new tradition, there is no limit to what your family can do to make your Christmas special and unique. My hope is not only that these things will be passed on but that my children will look back on those moments and cherish them  in their hearts with fondness.

These are some of the things we do:

       1. The Christmas tree always goes up the first weekend in December. We only have one tree. The decor can change from year to year. It must come down by New Years Day.  My grandma said every year should have it's own tree. It works for me.
       2.  We purchase one personalized ornament every year. Everyone in the house goes on the ornament-yes even the dogs. My favorite one is from the year my cousin was living in our basement with her dog and we had two dogs of our own. That particular ornament is a Christmas tree and every one's name made it on an ornament. Adorbs.
       3.  My children build gingerbread houses/villages/ninja people. I love that. They have gone from little messy homes to neat ones with lots of thought, care, and precision. They make up some of my favorite candid pictures. Last year my daughter even had several friends come and they did theirs at our house to. They had theme and got a little competitive. That warmed my heart.
        4. Pajamas are given on Christmas Eve night. We stay in them all day on Christmas. Let me not forget that there will be a photo shoot of  my minis in said pajamas. The beauty of that is I can really see how much they've grown and changed over the years. Now there is is a moment of nostalgia for you.
        5. Our stockings give us life. Everyone has to contribute to the other family member's stockings. There is no real limit to what one can do. For some reason, it has become one of the best parts of our Christmas celebration. Normally, I put favorite candies and small gift cards into them. One may find purse sized items or any number of unexpected items in the stocking. I usually find mini bottles of spirits and lottery scratch-off tickets. Yes, I like going into mine as much as they do.
        6. We do a huge breakfast on Christmas morning and a very non-traditional meal in the evening. Dinner can range from surf and turf, to Italian, to very heavy appetizers. That appetizer meal was one of my favorites.
         7. We no longer do a birthday cake for Jesus. We used to and we'd sing "Happy Birthday" and everything. We tried doing cupcakes but there was less enthusiasm for that tradition as the kids got older.
         8. This year, I am introducing a new tradition. Unbeknownst to him, my son will be reading the original Christmas story straight from the book of Luke.

There are tons of other things that can be done. Remember Christmas is more about giving than receiving.  It's a lesson I tried to instill early on so that my children will always find that being charitable is in style, no matter what you have going on personally. I would love for you to share some things your family does to make the season personal. Some things seem insignificant but you really don't know the impact you are having on your children till they get older.

I hope you find the real true meaning of Christmas reflected in all you do. Take a moment each day to reflect on God's love and be intentional about sharing that love. The world is in dire need of seeing Christ in you. Not sure if I will post again before 2016, so please have a safe and blessed Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa. If you find that you are lacking, choose to begin a tradition and make it happen annually. Don't look back and see that you had a Merry Christmas without meaning. You want to look back and see A merry Christmas filled with the meaning of the season. Jesus is the reason for the season and without Christ, There'd be no Christmas.

Merry CHRISTmas to you and your family. May 2016 be filled with the best and brightest blessings that God can bestow upon you!

December Randomness

Thanksgiving is last week's news. We are now on our way to what has to be the craziest season of indulgent consumerism. No matter what it is, it is still the most wonderful time of year for me. I absolutely love Christmas. I love it because it is the celebration of my dear Savior's birth. I love Christmas music. As I type this blog, I am listening to "O Holy Night." It is one of my favorite Christmas songs ever. I enjoy the mood of the season. I also take pleasure in doing for others.

While Thanksgiving was last week, I just wanna say it was one of the best ever for me. Not only did my mom come to visit, but I had the pleasure of having my brother coming to visit too. You may be thinking that it really isn't a big deal. It is a big deal to me and here's why. I sat racking my brain for days about the last time he and I sat down and even shared that holiday. I came up with Thanksgiving of 1997. That was 18 years ago y'all. Crazy right?

For two weeks, I've had the pleasure of just hanging out with him and catching up. Don't take your relationships for granted. Family matters. It's been a year of many change. For me, it was good to lay eyes on him for several reason. For my mom, it gave her the opportunity to lay eyes on both her children at the same time. It happens very rarely. I mean hardly ever. For my children, it was a chance to get to know their uncle better. My son needed that. In fact, I am hoping they will continue to bond better once he's gone. My brother is wise and he is a great dad.  Did I mention, he makes great chocolate chip cookies too? Seriously, social media, cell phones, and the like have you thinking you are connected,  and to some small degree, you are; but the personal touch, being in the presence of an individual are priceless moments compared to a screen or phone. I hate that he lives so far away. Texas is far y'all. Maybe I'll convince him to move to Virginia. Pray with me. By the way our Thanksgiving feast was all that. my sister and I put our toes in that meal. Everything was really tasty. We ended the night with family games which are always competitive and hysterically funny.

Last night, we watched The Wiz live with most of Black America. One of my closest girlfriends, discovered "Black Twitter." That was absolutely hilarious to me. I admit, I am a die hard Stephanie Mills fan. Girlfriend has some chops on her petite self and she can blow. Shanice Wilson had huge shoes to fill. For a complete newbie, I think she did a great job. The contemporary version left me satisfied and confirmed that there is room for more than one interpretation of anything. The costumes were colorful and bright and very well done. Evilene's make was absolutely flawless. I think the choreography was good too. I missed Toto but I understood that a live performance would probably be a bit much for the pooch to handle. Say what you will, there will always be some haters out there who are dedicated to the original or the Broadway stage play. It is not easy to pull off what that cast did but I think they did a great job. Shanice performed well for a first gig and no real training. She did not move me with her performance of "Home." Of course I must admit that that is my favorite song of all time and well no one does it like Stephanie Mills. It's impossible.

As has become the norm, acts of violence are happening everywhere. Some of us are appalled, others believe these acts are conspiracies designed to evoke fear, and others simply seem not to care. Wherever you fall on the spectrum, one thing is clear. Human life is no longer a valued commodity. We must be ever vigilant and even more prayerful. Life is but a vapor and while God has always made that clear, we need to embrace the thought.

On that note, I close by encouraging you to love your people well. Be intentional in your interactions and be present for the moments. God is always in the details. As Christmas approaches remember that there are folks who don't enjoy the holidays. Find a way to brighten their day. Then remember the less fortunate. They need you in non-holiday months too. Kindness doesn't cost a thing. Finally, remember Jesus is the reason for the season. Make sure that you reflect the love of Christ in all you do. The world needs to see His sacrificial love in you. Be blessed and by all means, be a blessing. Peace.

Christmas is not About You

I woke up thinking about Christmas. I love this time of year whether I'm motivated to shop or not. This year, I'm really not. Children of any age can care less about your motivation, so you have to put on your big girl panties and proceed to handle your business. While it is easy to see that consumerism is the message we get bombarded with during this season, the real message we need to embrace is that Christmas really is about what we do for others. It's also about how we allow God to interrupt our good plans and impart His Great plan. I posted this thought on my FB page yesterday and I hope you can live it out this Christmas and everyday: Allow the promise of Christmas to overshadow the painful realities of your life. Do not allow Christmas to be defined by your disappointment, but allow your disappointment to be forever changed because of Christmas. If you can do this and help someone along the way, we will each see the true meaning of Christmas, There is ALWAYS going to be someone worse off than you. I hope the love of Christ fills you and takes you out of your comfort zone this Christmas season. One small act of kindness each day can change some one's entire attitude for the better. Be intentional-Be a blessing!

Happy Mother's Day

Today is the day we celebrate the woman who gave us life. That person is usually our first love. Parenting is never easy. So no matter how you feel or what you think your mom failed to do, she is a woman who deserves your honor today.

That being said, if you are a mother who is not being celebrated or honored in the way you deserve, let me remind you that you are important. Your love and care of your child will impact future generations. God chose you to shape and form your child. Some of you are not birth parents but you still parent. Your role is no less important. So today, I salute you. Whether your importance is recognized or not, God sees all and knows all. He loves you for all you have done and will do. He sees your tears and heartaches, He sees your trials and victories. Happy Mother's Day!

Can You Further the Dream???

Today is the day we honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I am reflecting on his courage and magnetism. He was such an awesome orator. He moved people to action when he wasn't satisfied that people of color were being treated fairly. He moved a nation to correct it's injustice and the Civil Right Movement moved forward with fervor and speed under his repeated cries for justice and equality for all. Fifty years later, I am sure he would be pleased with our progress toward fulfilling his dream but I am sure he, like myself, would think we still had room for growth. The dream is still a work in progress in an America where color is the majority. We have work to do when it comes to treating people fairly in nearly every arena. Everyone wants their fair share of the pie. We all want to be recognized for our merit and pray that bias isn't holding us back.

We live in a society where the discussion of race is still not easily broached and discussions tend to be more superficial than honest. America is going to be continually forced to deal with the issue of color and treatment of people who are not white. We are in a unique position of progressing the dream without violence and less prejudices. We cannot overlook the tragedies of the past but we can move forward with dignity and grace. Heaven is going to be a rainbow of color and race; religion, education, money, and other frivolous things will mean absolutely nothing. We can no longer major on the minor.

Keeping the dream alive means embracing all races and colors, as well as insuring that our friends and neighbors are treated fairly and get to reap the same benefits as everyone else. Left to our own devices, we all have bias-conscious and unconscious but let's face it, our fear is really what holds us back. We need to champion ourselves and others but none of us should be held in higher regard than anyone else. We don't have to agree but we should be able to agree to disagree without hate, malice or violence.  The best way to keep the dream alive, is to live it and ensure that those around us are living it too. All things start with one small action. If you can change one action, you can inspire change in your little sphere of the world. I think then and only then will Dr. King's dream be fully realized. I am going to do my part, are you going to do yours?

Thankful Me

Happy Thanksgiving to each of you! Right now, I am sitting here with a full tummy watching football with my family. It's a good night even though some family is not here-they are in other places. I am so thankful that we had an awesome meal-My fam can throw down in the kitchen so we are never disappointed.. I am blessed to be in North Carolina with my sister in law, niece, and nephew. It has been nine and a half years since I've seen the kids, who are now wonderful young adults.

I am reminded that despite the trials and tribulations that I experience daily, God is good and I remain extremely blessed even when the lessons are painful. I am here with my children. We arrived safely despite the rain and even a bit of snow that followed us from Virginia to North Carolina. It is a blessing to see the children all interact without any awkwardness. It is also funny to see them all sitting on the sofa with at least one device in hand. It's driving my sister in law nuts.

I have heard from almost all the people who mean the most to me. I have posted a thankful post every day this month on Facebook. Some days, my posts were deep and others, they were mundane and frivolous but still, I had much to be thankful for. Not just during this season, but every day of the year. The holidays are difficult for many but hopefully despite missing their loved ones, they too realize that they are blessed.

God has always been good to me. He shows me favor in great ways and small. Any problems or worries usually end up being a waste of time and energy. I simply need to remember that He has never ever left me alone or without a solution better than I could conceive for myself. I am trying daily to surrender all to Him--all my fears, troubles, worries, desires, and burdens. It is not easy but it does build my faith.

If you are reading my blog, you too have many reasons to be thankful. You are here. You are breathing. You woke up this morning. You have electricity. You have food, clothing, and shelter. You have enough. In other words, you are blessed.  I hope you have given thanks with a grateful heart. As we wind down the year, remember to bless others. Pay it forward in some small way. Be kind, be giving, and smile. Let the love of Christ and all that He has done for you shine brightly throughout this season. Count your blessings!

New Beginnings!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

These are my resolutions for 2012:

I resolve not to make any resolutions which I probably wouldn't keep anyway. That being said, I welcome the New Year because it brings new opportunities and a fresh perspective to what might be an old situation. So I resolve to be a better me. That translates into being happy, healthy, and positive. I can't let my circumstances define my persona. In turn, I will remain true to the fact that God will carry me through the highs and lows of life. Who benefits from this? Well, everyone in my space. A better me means a better Christian, wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, teacher, blogger, lover and anything in between. Every New Year is filled with promise. This year we each have 366 days to be better and do better. Don't make resolutions! Just put it in your head and heart that 201 will be more than you can dream or imagine and wake up each day filled with that purpose. One foot forward, no looking back! So what are you waiting for? There are only a few hours left and then you will only have 365 days to get it right.

Whatever your resolve or perspective, may 2012 be the best one yet. Life is journey, it takes a million twists and turns. Some are expected and others blow us away. The best that we can do is stay true to ourselves and not let the needs and wants of others change who we are at our core. We really can't be everything to everybody. We need to show resilience and grace in the midst of our storms. It is easier to smile than frown. Most important, we need to be honest...honest about our feelings, desires, shortcomings, and life experiences. Everyone can benefit from the truth. Finally, don't forget to pray, it may not change your situation but it will definitely change you! Enjoy all the blessings that are in store for you in 2012!

Divaliciously yours,

Pam

Twas the Night Before CHRISTmas

Today is Christmas Eve! Yea! You all know that I absolutely love Christmas. From my previous post, you also know that I was having trouble getting into to the spirit of the season this year. Well the moment is upon us. I know there are folks out there shopping today but alas, I will not be one of them. Children are eagerly anticipating all the material things that they will receive under their beautifully decorated trees tomorrow. Parents are exhausted from running to and fro to find the right toy or gadget. Cookies are baked, parties have been given. The sad thought is that most of things have not included the real thing. Jesus, the reason for the season. You all are aware that Christmas is a spiritual holiday, aren't we? Funny, even secular folk get caught up in the wonder of the moment.

Christmas Eve is a good time to reflect on the past year and start looking ahead to the year to come. If you are reading this post, you are very blessed. God has been good to you. For some reading the post, it has been a good year, for others perhaps, it has been stressful year. All of us have weathered our share of ups and downs, trials and triumphs. We have lost loved ones, gained new friends, watched our finances stretch beyond our wildest imaginations. We've seen politics played out in the most immature and condescending fashion. Celebrities fiascoes have invaded our homes and wasted our time(and energy). Terrorists have been captured and killed. Icons have died and left legacies that will forever change technology. Television will not be the same but of course we already know that given the number of reality televisions shows that air daily and the lack of talk shows being able to survive.

No matter what has happened, guess who was NOT surprised? You got it, GOD. He ordained every single moment. I often find myself wondering why He allows some of the foolishness. Look what sin has done. Anyhoo, I digress! Christmas Eve is one of my favorite part of the season. Energy is high in my house and just about every other house in the world. What I hope is not missing is the reflection of what happened long long ago. The birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Like Mary, the Virgin Mother, there are things we really should ponder in our heart.

Christmas should be carried with us throughout the year not just from Thanksgiving to New Year. Our hearts should be filled with love for others 24/7. We should be kind to strangers and service workers. We should be hospitable, we should be caring and we should be happy. Our minds should go to the lonely neighbor down the street, the childless widow at work, the countless men and women who sacrifice their family time and unfortunately, sometimes their lives to protect our country, and the saints who serve on mission fields to spread the gospel of Christ. Our prayers should also be filled with these people. I say it all the time, "Be blessed and be a blessing!" Blessing don't have to cost a thing. It takes nothing to smile, hold the door, or engage someone in a really meaningful conversation. The gift of time is precious but it is also priceless.

Jesus had the unique ability to meet people wherever they were. Jesus met all of their needs. Physical, mental, emotion, and most importantly, their spiritual needs. Ministry is work but He made it look so easy. Jesus was never impatient and always had an agenda, yet He took time to nourish His own spirit with prayer. He surrounded himself with a myriad of characters who were constantly surprised by His compassion, power, and insight. Take note my friends. and take heart. Life isn't easy. It is even more difficult when you only focus on yourself and fail to pray.

As we embrace the real day that has been set aside to celebrate the birth of Christ, let us all reflect on how unselfishly God gave His only Son Jesus Christ for us. Let us not keep Jesus out of our celebration. Let us  hold the love we have at Christmas in our heart the whole year through. Embrace your family and friends and hold them close. Yea, I know they are all dysfunctional but hey, they are your dysfunctional peeps. Be kind to strangers, all the time. Donate to charity! SMILE! PRAY! BE BLESSED AND BE A BLESSING!

Whatever you celebrate...Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or Christmas......let it be filled with love and laughter. Be merry. Be thankful for all God has brought you through. You aren't the same person you were last Christmas. Hopefully, that is a good thing. Everyday is a new day. Christmas spirit can be a part of every one of them. As the night ushers in Christmas, remember that without CHRIST, there would be no Christmas and that Jesus is the reason for the season. Make that reality a part of your thoughts for the next 36 hours. You simply can't have a celebration with out inviting the guest of honor to the celebration! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

Without Christ, There Couldn't Be a CHRISTMAS!!!

Christmas really is the most wonderful time of the year! For some reason, I am having a difficult time getting into the spirit. Maybe it is the commercialism that has dulled my senses. Let's face it, Christmas decor is being displayed earlier and earlier each year. I keep joking that eventually, it will be on display year round. I wish there was a rule that Christmas displays can't be put out til Thanksgiving. I know that means we'd only see them for a month. At this point in my life, I'd settle for November 1st.

Christmas has lost its focus on Christ. I realize that many people have no spiritual grounding. During the month of December, I post a song, sometimes secular, sometimes spiritual, and this year a Christmas related quote. Who cares about being politically correct? My girlfriend watched A Charlie Brown Christmas for the first time this year and was pleasantly surprised that the special actually does focus on the true meaning of Christmas and that Linus' lines have not been edited out. He does quote directly form the Bible.

Our best hope for the season remains in Christ. For those that don't know what it means to have a relationship with Christ, one can only hope that they will embrace the best spirit of the holiday. That means that hopefully they are a little more patient with the salesclerks or a little more charitable with their possessions. More importantly, I hope they encounter at least one person who will share with them the love of Christ and what His birth and ultimately His death means to them. Only then can you know the real meaning of Christmas.

The story of Christ's birth is simple and plain but it is no short of a true miracle. I end this post by sharing it with you straight from the book of Luke, Chapter 2, verses 1-2: In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,  "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!" When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us." And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. (ESV)

I hope you have taken the time to reflect on the simplicity of Christmas. It really isn't about the gifts you give or receive but about the hope you have in your heart. It is about the character and joy you bring to others the whole year through. Like Mary, we need to ponder these things in our heart. Jesus was God's gift to us so that we could have eternal life. Without Christ, there would be no Christmas! Jesus is the reason for the season!

Happy Birthday, To Me!!!

As my birthday is coming to a close, I am reflecting on the past year and my life in general. I am so blessed with a loving and supportive family, great friends who are like family, and more acquaintances than I can mention. There is nothing like having a wonderful group of people to help you through this strange thing called life. I love my husband and children. They make me laugh and scream and cry and pray. They give me balance and they throw me off balance. I couldn't imagine anyone else filling my days. They make me want to be a better person. They make me pray for a better world filled with opportunity and true equality.

My mom is one of my biggest cheerleaders. I am thankful that I am at a point in my life where I can actually say that we are truly friends and confidantes. I realize now how many sacrifices she made to give my brother and I a life of quality. She invested her time and talents, her resources were often lacking. It made such a difference in our character and values. Both my brother and I are better parents because of her example. I try to make sure that she knows that I love her and I really am appreciative of her willingness to invest and build children who are making a mark on their corners of the world. It goes without saying, that my grandmother made a major impression on my life as well. That Gemini woman quietly imprinted my life in ways I can't even put on paper. I have aunts who play a special part in my life and now those of my children too. I really do come from a strong stock of women. I carry a part of each of them with me.

I know I have written about my friends in previous posts but let me just say that I have some ride or die friends. I have women in my life who pray for me, check me, and uplift me. They support me through all kinds of crazy moments and happy moments. They too make me a better person. They have loved me through good times and bad. They check my children and sometimes my hubby too. They get me. I hope I bless them as much as they bless me.

So....God has blessed me with good people whom I wouldn't trade in for the world. Really, He has blessed me with a good life. I have done some great things. I wish I had done some things differently. I wish I had learned some lessons sooner rather than later. I can't even comment on the number things that I wish I had not said. I have made mistakes. In spite of it all, I get up every day and purpose to be a better person. My dad's motto was "Life to the fullest, no regrets!" Really it should be all of our mottoes. We should live each day to the fullest and when we reach the end, we should have few, if any, regrets. Sometimes, we have to smile even though we wanna cry and sometimes we need to let the tears flow. We need to reach out to others and encourage them on their life journey. You really never know when the lessons you've learned will empower and help somebody else.

I know me better than anyone else. I am strong. I am kind. I am loving. I am prayerful. I am confident. I am every woman(in my Chaka Khan voice). I was born for a purpose. I haven't done all I plan to do. I love people and I want to see the best in them. I want to live out God's plan for me life. I want to continue to be honest and trustworthy. A great wife, mom, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend and whatever other roles I play are also what I strive to be.

So as I embrace turning 29 again, I place certain challenges upon myself. As always, to be a woman God can use. To be more healthy, mentally, physically, and emotionally. I am not going to allow people to impose their ideas of who I should be upon me. I am comfortable in my skin. I will always remain true and faithful to a set of core values. I am a person of my word. I am not given to following the crowd. What may look crazy to you, may be normal for me. I remain extremely prayerful. Chante is going to high school in September and that is a whole new world of parenting for us. I have no problem burdening others to pray for us and to intervene if necessary. Each day, I take stock of the people and influences in my life. If they aren't right or are causing excessive negative energy, they get the boot. Life is too short for folks who drain you in every interaction. So these things being said(and yes, I really could go on some more), I wish myself a very Happy Birthday! I thank God for the things He has done in this year and I welcome the challenges and blessings of the year to come. I only pray that I remember to seek His face and  that I remember when I am in the midst of a storm, that it too shall pass. Here's to another year of good living. Ciao!

Hope Rings Anew!

This is the last day of 2010! Can you believe it? As I watched the "Year in Review" segments on many television shows, I was blown away by how much actually happens in a 365 day period. Some things triumphant and some things tragic and a little of everything in between. Personally, each of us has faced highs and lows, created memories, and reached milestones. Isn't it amazing that God already knew the outcome of every situation and all of the small (and large) details? No matter how surprised we were by anything that occurred this year, God was not.

I am happy to see the year come to a close. I admit that I have been blessed in big ways and small. However, when I reflect on the year, I struggled a lot. I struggled as a wife and a mother. I struggled with attitudes and finances. I struggled with my inability to change some situations that God was probably using to build my character. I could go on and on but I refuse to complain. I know any and all of you can relate. There is good and bad in all of our lives and sometimes it is easier to bear than others. For me, I am embracing the promise of a New Year. I am not really making resolutions. I always have a challenge going on in my head and I always purpose to live it out. If you read my blogs enough, you can probably figure out my goals for the year.

A New Year brings hope and promise. It brings a fresh perspective. It creates another opportunity to grow and change, spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically. Resolutions or none, we all have something we want to see manifested in the promise of what "NEW" brings. We are not satisfied with the monotony of life; there is a change to be made somewhere be it in our relationships with God or others, or in our career or in our dysfunctional family. Change is always sought. Sometimes the changes are disappointing and sometimes they are more than we expected. Funny thing about change is this, we never stop expecting it no matter what it brings.

So as we send 2010 packing and welcome 2011, I hope you can reflect on the past and embrace the future. I hope that you can leave the baggage of 2010 behind and begin 2011 afresh and anew. You can choose your purpose and attitude for the year to come. It takes dedication and determination. It also takes the ability to try again if you happen to fail. Baby steps folks, baby steps.

My friend, Tracie, has challenged her friends to find a word for 2011 and let it be the focus for the year. I think my word is going to be contentment. It is a good choice but will probably be more difficult to live out than I think. We live in a world where we always think we need more and deserve more. I Timothy 6-8(NIV) states, " But godliness with contentment is great gain.  For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.  But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that." Having read that verse, I note that in order to be content, I also need godliness. So I guess my work is cut out for me. I am thinking that if I work on the godly part, the contentment will come a little easier. I will keep you posted on my journey! Prayerfully, when I get to the year end reflection on 2011, I will have been successful in both arenas.

What about you? Where are you as we close out this year? Have you made up your mind about how you want to begin the New Year? It really is a good time to take stock of the past(hurts, pains, trials, and tribulations) and renew your vision for the future. I wish you the best of the best for the year to come. I hope you reach your goals. I hope you change for the better, I hope you learn to trust God more. I hope you choose to see the good in those around you! Finally, I hope that you purpose in your heart to bless someone else this year with your time, talent, or resources. That sense of charity will instill in you a feeling of hope and give you a new perspective. Be safe everyone! Thanks for allowing me into your lives. Till next year! Enjoy the rest of 2010 and let's make 2011 the best one yet! Happy New Year to you and yours!

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to each of you, my devoted readers. Christmas is almost over. All the gifts have been purchased and most of them opened. Our tummies are full and our children are very happy and extremely blessed by their gifts. We have been bombarded by more sale advertisements than our brains could handle and I am sure many of us braved the stores trying to catch a sale or score a bargain. We are all acutely aware that a New Year is coming along with a mailbox full of bills too. Now we are contemplating and pondering how the New Year will be different and all the changes that we are gonna make.

I hope as this day has come to a close we each have taken the time to reflect on the true gift of this season. I hope we have done this many times over the past month despite getting caught up in the rat race of holiday madness. God's gift of His Son, Jesus is the reason we celebrate. The best gifts are not those we place under the tree but those we give of ourselves. Our time, our service, or talents. Let each of aim to remember that as we make our resolutions for 2011. I continue to remind you that on our worst day, we really are extremely blessed. That said, we all have something to give. Sometimes it is a simple smile to a stranger on the street. Others, it may be the clothes we have sitting in our closet that we will not be wearing. It can be holding an infant in the hospital or reading to a class. The list goes on and on but trust me there are needs all around you, you only need to look in your own backyard.

None of us know what it cost to willingly sacrifice our child for the world, and we never will. We will suffer loss, we will face defeat, and some times we may even lose heart, but God has given us His Son to carry us through all of those things and then some.  I hope you know how special that gift really is for each of us. Every individual has an opportunity to have a relationship with Christ and all of our relationships will look different. It is called a personal relationship, you know? I trust that whatever your relationship with Him is, it will grow in the year to come.

Luke 2:10-11 states, "But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord." That is the gift we as Christians celebrate(and a whole lot of non-Christians, too). Let your gifts shine forth all year not just in December. That would be the best gift we could give to the Greatest Gift of All! I certainly hope you found your Christmas merry and your holidays happy! I also hope you took time to really reflect on the true meaning of the season...Without Christ, there would be no Christmas. I hope you took time out of your busy celebrations to wish Jesus a very Happy Birthday!

Tis The Season

Hi Everyone! I hope you are all well. I have been missing in action but I kept thinking, "I need to post a blog." Well I have been tired and unmotivated. As is the norm, I have millions of thoughts in my head fighting to be put into print. To bad, I can't type from my head. Anyhoo, it really is my favorite time of year. I absolutely love Christmas. Yesterday, God even blessed our area with a little snow(and the kids got an unnecessary snow day, today).

I love the Christmas season. I am most happy when I focus on Christ, not the mundane activity and busyness of the holiday. If you read my last blog, which was a great guest spot by my dear friend, Tracie, you would understand why I loved it enough to post it. For some reason, it is difficult to keep Christmas simple. People and advertisers make it complicated. Well this year, my joy for the season seems less bright than in the past. I have been pondering on the reason why.

Christmas is about Christ. It is a holiday that celebrates the birth of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. When we reflect on the original Christmas story, there is no busyness and things are simple. Joy is present too. Mary and Joseph were together and they had no place to stay. Mary didn't complain about having to birth her special gift in a manger with animals on a bed of hay. We are complaining about the cold(or the bills, or the children). The Three Wise Men were just happy to travel the roads to behold the newborn King and present him with their gifts. I am guilty of complaining and so are many of you.

We forget that on our worst day, we are still so very blessed. I am guilty of thinking about the perfect gift for this person or that. Today, as I type, I have done little shopping but lots of stressing. Would people be mad if I didn't get them anything? The reality is that some folks would. I am beginning to think that all gifts should have to come with a note about why you bought the gift and an explanation of what the recipient means to you. It would go something like this...."Mom, I bought this gift for you because love you so much and without the sacrifices you made for me, I wouldn't be the woman I am today." or "DJ, I gave you this game because the empathy you have for others, has made me more sensitive to others." Wouldn't that be awesome?!?

Giving is what the season is about. We need to remember this all year long. There are organizations that need food, clothes, and volunteers all year long. As a parent, I am extremely conscious of the fact that my children have way more than they need. It is important for me to impress upon them that there are children who are not as fortunate as they are. It is not their reality. I want them to have a heart to serve and bless others with their resources, time, and talent. All giving is not material.

This is not quite what I thought I was going to write so I guess this is the message God wanted me to impart....Jesus is the reason for the season. Have you taken any moments out of the past month to reflect on the grace and mercy of God? A new year is coming quickly. When I reflect on 2010, I can see that God has remained faithful even when I lost my focus on Him. He has protected me and kept me. He has given me peace in the midst of marital storms and parental storms. He has provided all of my needs and many of my wants. He has put people in my life who validate me, encourage me, and admonish me. He has given me the gift of health, creativity and love. I could go on and on, but this I know to be true, Christmas can be a joyous time of celebration and all kinds of other things but if you haven't put Christ into any of it, it really is pointless.

So a week before Christmas, I ask, where is your focus? Has Christ been at the center of any of your holiday activity? If you have been running around to mall after mall, and store after store, searching for this or that for this person and that, SLOW DOWN. No! Just stop! Meditate on where you were a year ago and where you are now. A lot has happened, correct? Yep, I know! Don't you just become overwhelmed by just the small minute blessings in your life? It is mind blowing, huh? God has been good to you. I know He's been all that and a bag of chips to me. Give Him the praise and honor He deserves. Look at your nativity set and really focus  the real CHRISTmas Story. Do the gifts matter? Not really. People do though. Have you smiled at your elderly neighbor or offered to run an errand? Maybe he just needs an unhurried conversation to brighten his day. Have you offered the single mom with four kids a few hours of babysitting so she can get somethings done? Have you given away a coat or any gently used clothing so someone can be warm this winter. Well what are you waiting for? The best gifts are those that cost us little or no money. The gift of God in us goes a long way. Till next time remember, without Christ, there really would be no Christmas!!!!

A Mary Christmas

So December has rolled in rather quietly and the reality is that the celebration of Christ's birth is imminently near. It is easy for us to get caught up in the holiday bustle and FORGET that the true focus of Christmas is Christ. No matter how much we love Him, it is easy to get caught up and thrown off balance. The other day, my dear friend Tracie asked me to proofread a devotional that she would deliver to the leadership team of our Bible Study. I loved it and asked her if I could share. She was willing and the following are her words. Let us know what you think!

As the calendar turned to expose November, my mind immediately turned to Christmas…(how could they not when the stores had already decked their aisles)...how were we going to afford it, where were we going to put the tree and decorations, we are in a new house after all, would Meredith be here, would my mom visit, I really would like to get the kitchen painted before the holiday, what picture will we send out this year…..but regrettably I admit, none of my thoughts were consumed with how can I “Worship my Savior”, how could I “Prepare for His Birth”….they were all selfish/self-centered thoughts and worries.

So I began to be convicted daily about the amount of time I spend Preparing to Celebrate the Season when what I truly wanted/needed to do is Worship my Savior….. How do I Worship rather than Celebrate….To Celebrate is to observe or commemorate and event through public festivities and gatherings…To Worship is to express adoring reverence or regard personally through ardent devotion….WOW, I don’t’ know that I have ever really worshipped Christmas (the coming of the Savior...) but I know I have done a lot of celebrating.

In my effort to seek out how to do just that…Worship my Savior this year rather than merely Celebrate the Season, I began daily reading the account of Christs incarnation and studying the ONE biblical example of a woman who had Prepared for the Saviors arrival….Mary.

So how do we have “A Mary Christmas”? Revisit and re-read Luke 1:26 – 39 and Luke 2:4 – 20 which tell the original Christmas story. Let's use the word "SIMPLE" as an acronym for how we can keep Christ in Christmas and not major on the minor this holiday season as well as follow Mary's example.

S – Scriptural : Mary sang hymns and spiritual songs…”The Magnificat”, she recognized the Messiah of Old Testament as the angel appointed her mother of the Most High God. So often this time of year when our focus should be on God and His Word, it is laid aside in an effort to accomplish the many other tasks on our to-do list….we’ll get back to a quiet time in the New Year…we’ll resolve. Make Christmas Scriptural….We give our children three gifts each year, a gift of want, a gift of need and a gift of love…in keeping with the 3 gifts Jesus received from the Maggi. I read an article this year of a family whose gifts are based on Luke 2:40..”And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom and the grace of God was upon Him.” Is your Advent calendar filled with candy or treats, do you open the door to receive a sweet, or do you open the door to taste and see that the Lord is good…add a short Scripture reading to each day.

I – Intentional: Mary was intentional about her preparation…she asked the angel a specific question in v. 34 of Chapter 1, “how will this be”. In v. 39 of that same Chapter, Mary got ready and hurried to Elizabeth's home. We receive so many invitations and offers, we have so many commitments this time of year, each student has a concert or performance, the angel choir is singing, the company Christmas party, the ladies Christmas brunch….the list goes on and on….but we need to be intentional with our time…Determine in your heart and mind ahead of time what you will and wont participate in, the activities you do and don’t have time for….and I promise you, it is easier if you keep in mind that you want to Worship the Savior this year rather than Celebrate a Season.

M – Memorable: Luke 2:19, But Mary, Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart”….The word treasured in that verse in the Greek means to “preserve” or “to make a memory of”…Mary made a memory of these things…..Is my Christmas memorable to me and my children, or do I want to forget them at the end of December and rush into January….am I making memories?
P – Purposeful: in verse 31 – 33, Mary receives her purpose, and she then lives the rest of her life fulfilling that purpose. If my purpose is to Worship the Savior this December, then the commitments I make, events I attend and gifts I give should be fulfilling that purpose….what is my purpose behind baking 15 types of cookies..? To bless the neighbors with a plate, or to win the Betty Crocker award? What is my purpose for attending all of those events….to be the Christmas Queen, to impress someone else, or because it’s an opportunity to witness to the lost world around me…? What is your purpose…?

L – Lasting/Eternal: Mary had an eternal perspective…in v. 33, the angel told Mary, he (the son you will bear) Jesus will reign over the house of Jacob forever and his kingdom will never end. Is what I am doing to prepare this Advent season temporal or eternal….do those 15 different types of cookies have any eternal value….Yes, if they are given with a card that shares the true meaning of Christmas, but No, if they are just for the neighborhood cookie exchange. Luke 2:19 again says Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart….What are you treasuring up this Christmas…? Matthew 6:19 - 24 tells us, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven where moth and rust do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

E – Enjoyable: In the midst of announcement, anticipation and arrival…Mary pondered which in the Greek means “to meditate, to think quietly, soberly, deeply” “ to appraise, to weigh in the mind the value of”…Mary sat in the straw of a stable, cuddled the Savior and enjoyed….as the angels around her rejoiced, the shepherds beside her shard, and she enjoyed…..

I pray you have “A Mary Christmas”….May you Worship the Savior!

Happy Birthday, Dmitri II!!

Nine years ago, I was blessed with a beautiful baby boy! Time definitely flies. Dmitri Jean Anthony Thorpe II, whom we call "DJ," was born at 2:13 PM on a warm summer day.  He weighed in at 7 pounds 11 ounces. The whole time I was pregnant Chante kept telling people her brother was coming on July13th despite the fact that my due date was July 17th. Needless to say that child jinxed me (SN: I did not want him to be born on Friday the 13th because it would be just wrong, not superstitious, I just didn't like it).

On the 13th, I had a doctor's appointment at 10. I went happily out of my house with a croissant in hand and a fresh hair do. Hubby was going to be 90 miles away at one of his satellite offices and I cautioned him that there would be no cause for alarm. DJ was content and no dilation had occurred and I feared he would be very late. It was mid July and I was in a wedding exactly six weeks later for one of my best friends, Dana. Anyhoo, I digress. The nurse went to track his heartbeat and I remember telling her that I felt really sleepy and cold. She was a new nurse and was looking on his chart telling me that "Your baby is never in the same place when we try to get heartbeat." I laughed. I thought I dozed off. I opened my eyes to an alarmed nurse and a doctor who had not been standing there before. The doctor says, "Mrs. Thorpe, looks like you are going to have that baby today(DAMN CHANTE!), an ambulance is on its way to transport you to the hospital." Ugh excuse me, my hubby is 90 miles away and why? I had a seizure and I was 39 weeks. So off I was going to the hospital for tests and then to be safe to induce labor and bring DJ into the world. UMM yeah, not quite the day I had in mind.

Long story, short...I am whisked off to the hospital where I am given an EKG. There went my cute hair because what? I had an updo! I also had an MRI. Not fun when you are 9 months pregnant. Let's note that I never had a seizure before(and haven't had one since). Dmitri drove like a maniac and made it to the hospital in God you were blessed not have gotten a ticket time. My girlfriend, Rose beat the ambulance there. I was worried about leaving my car at the doctor's and about getting some food. Late that evening I was finally induced. DJ wasn't trying to leave the womb and my physician was going to stop the induction and send me home. After a "come to Jesus" discussion with Dmitri, induction was stepped up. I spent the night in the hospital with my friend, Jeanine(my only friend to miss Chante's birth) at my side. Let's just say that I never peed so much in my life. A sista could have no food and I was evil. I had an IV and I could have apple juice flavored ice chips. WTF? Pitocin induced labor is not fun. They stepped that up on the morning of the 14th and I requested an epidural. At that point, I was dilated only 6 cm. I got the best anesthesiologist ever and she hooked me up.As soon as she shot me and gave me more because I still felt pain, I felt DJ drop, told the doctor it was time to push and she thought I was wrong. After I told her that "if my baby hit the floor I would kill everybody in the room," she took me more seriously, warned me not to push but still looked like I knew not what I was talking about, and advised another doc in the room to check me. He told her, "Yep the baby's head is right there." Everyone went into hyper mode but me because I could only think of Pepsi and good food. Three pushes and he was here. Yea me! He was healthy, Yea me again! Get me some damn food now!

DJ is such a sweet kid. He has a really caring and concerned spirit and very laid back nature. He really is an old man trapped in a nine year old body. He does not like controversy and he wants everyone to be friends. He is a peacemaker. He loves everything Star Wars. He is a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan and he's recently become very much into the Military Channel and World War II.  He likes to read and he is wrestling fan. I love that he is sensitive and has a great sense of humor. When he's confident, you can't tell him anything. His love language is unequivocally words of affirmation.

I have high hopes and expectations for Dmitri. At this age, he wants to be many things...a teacher, a firefighter, a soldier, an illustrator. I constantly tell him that he can be whatever his little heart desires. I know that one day, he will be a kind, sensitive husband and an engaged father. He will be diplomatic and passionate about making his dreams come true. He will make his mark in his characteristic, quiet and determined way. He will always make me smile. He is not afraid to be affectionate and his charm will open doors for him. I could go on and on but I'll end here for now! So today, with a grateful heart, I say, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Dmitri!!! My sweet and handsome son. May God bless you today and always, and May He smile richly upon your future!"
